Scorpion and a bloody uppercut - Image 1Adolescence is usually the time when passions tend to run wild. That may be what happened to teenagers Lamar Roberts and Heather Trujillo, who have been accused of murdering Heather's half sister Zoe Garcia using what has been described as imitation moves from the Mortal Kombat series of games.

Roberts and Trujillo were reportedly babysitting Garcia while the sisters' mother was away at work. The teens allegedly hit, kicked and slammed Garcia Mortal Kombat-style, causing the younger sister to fall unconscious. Despite efforts to revive her, Garcia later died from multiple injuries.

Accounts of the incident varied. Roberts claimed that he was playing video games downstairs while the Trujillo and Garcia wrestled upstairs, but a witness claimed that Roberts himself had told the witness that he had struck Garcia. The same witness also said that Roberts claimed he was drunk, and that Garcia had asked the teens to stop.

Regardless of what actually happened, at least one thing is for sure: news like this is sure to fan the flames of indignation again for moral crusaders like Jack Thompson and Leland Yee.

How the hell is it that actual karate somehow has to do with Mortal Kombat?

Reality and fiction reality v.s fiction. You can't blame a crack addict on puff the magic dragon just like you cant blame a disturbed killer's act on a video game, In fantasy land sub zero rips out peoples spines and its just a game in the end, in reality. those two teens are going to a bad place to get anal raped on a daily basis.
reality v.s fiction. Reality wins every time.

Stop looking for places to put the blaim, Some people are just desturbed terrible human beings that do depraved things. Scorpion didnt do this. Two disturbed teens did.

» Sounds Like Another Lame Excuse

Regardless of videogames, it sounds like these people were prone to committing violence. The mother should have known that this wasn't a good idea if these people had these tendencies. Also this story doesn't give enough details. Who was the witness? How old were they? Were they intending to play wrestle or something? There isn't enough detail to make a good call on what really happened.

The alleged perpetrators were 16 and 17 years old. The witnesses to the incident weren't named, though. Sources also didn't indicate whether it was play wrestling or actual wrestling, either, but considering how it turned out...

Sorry, I find people that blame games for their kid’s bad behavior are just making an excuse for their own lack of communication with them. Hell they can blame games for kid shooting; they should blame the schools too for not teaching them it's wrong. How about books? Some kids kill each other in those, anyone complain? Lord of the Flies was mandatory reading in high school, should we sue the school for showing kids they can kill each other? In the end, this type of thing is the parent fault for not being able to bring up their children to know right from wrong, no matter what circumstances they may have themselves

I see.. So to conclude:

First by playing war games we became Pro soldiers.
Then by playing GTA we became Pro outlaws
After Manhunt we became all Pro psycho killers
And now after Mortal Combat we became deadly martial artists.

Right......

Very sad, yes. :(

It's also very sad that some people seem to be looking for an object upon which to vent their emotions, even if that means skirting the real issue...

Smart kids.....They kill somebody, then blame it on a video game......Now they will get court mercy.....

 » horrible and senseless

This is a very sad story. But it has very little to do with MK other than what the kid's called it. I did similar stuff with my friends and we called it "KungFu Theater" but we knew what was too far... and younger kids were never involved.

Like so many of the above have stated, this was a parental issue. The babysitters (ages 16-17) were drinking as well, and at that age (at least in the US) you know they weren't just casually sipping wine.

... Also I believe uppercuts and kicks are pretty generic forms of violence and that I've never seen the "Chest Tapping Mortality"

They didn't kill that kid because they were gamers, they killed that kid because they were cruel, psycho little a-holes. Both teens need to go to PRISON.

» Remember the days when people took responsibility for their actions?

Thats really a low thing to do kill somebody and blame video games. I mean really what did they think would happen they could uppercut & bodyslam a kid and no one would get hurt. I mean when you do these moves in the game the other person DIES. Its really sad that no one is held accountable for what they do. Shootup a school, beat someone to death its not little jimmy's fault its not the bully's fault its not the parents fault for not supervising the kids no its the music no wait its the games. You cant just drop a video game in someones hand and bam their a cold blooded murderer. I'm tried of all these Jack Thomson types who blame violence on video games. As if there were no such thing as violence before video games, Tv, and rock music. Nobody forced them to murder that kid they made a choice to beat that poor kid to death. Maybe they didn't mean for the kid to die but it happened. I really hope these murderers get the maximum penalty.

» To all of the above

Sad that it is such a brutal topic. But the people that blame games should print and read this comments list. It is a list of gamers that often rant with each other but in this arena we are united. Teenagers is a loose term as in many countries they are already old enough to marry or drive a car at 16 and 17. At 18 many may join the armed forces. These young people need Punishment and not some lame excuse.
