StarCraft II - Image 1

Planning a LAN party to celebrate the launch of StarCraft II (whenever that is)? You can still do that, but you'll all have to be connected to Battle.Net first.

Blizzard has confirmed that the upcoming RTS game will not support LAN play to further build up Battle.Net as the multiplayer solution for their games. That, and to combat piracy. Here's their official statement:

We don’t currently plan to support LAN play with StarCraft II, as we are building Battle.net to be the ideal destination for multiplayer gaming with StarCraft II and future Blizzard Entertainment games. While this was a difficult decision for us, we felt that moving away from LAN play and directing players to our upgraded Battle.net service was the best option to ensure a quality multiplayer experience with StarCraft II and safeguard against piracy.

Several Battle.net features like advanced communication options, achievements, stat-tracking, and more, require players to be connected to the service, so we’re encouraging everyone to use Battle.net as much as possible to get the most out of StarCraft II. We’re looking forward to sharing more details about Battle.net and online functionality for StarCraft II in the near future.

 » I am

Raging. I am a very fluent user of the LAN features of starcraft. I play it with my friends over a network one of us makes on a laptop, and we were really hoping to do the same so we could play wherever when starcraft 2 comes out.

While I understand the reasoning, it really depresses me to think that you HAVE to have internet access if you plan on playing this game with your local friends.

 » WTF?

I understand what they are trying to do, but they didn't look at the bigger picture.....

Imagine you are at a tournament with tons of people there and tons of different Starcraft games going on at once....If B-net was required, the internet speed of the place hosting the tournament would have to be insanely fast, or the games would probably lag....

Of course this kind of thing could also be said on a smaller scale, maybe 2 people just wanted to have a SC session on their laptops in the car. That would normally only require 1 crossover cable. But now, they would each have to have steady internet access through expensive wireless internet satellite cards, and decent reception....

This was clearly not thought out very well.....Or there better be some sort of "spawn" version so that LAN play would still be possible.....

I didn't even care about this game, but I've decided to go out of my way just to pirate it.

Yeah but thats "old money", as in money of yours they already have. They want "new money" as in your money that is still in your wallet. Corp greed is very powerful.

The whole thing is stupid: "While this was a difficult decision for us, we felt that moving away from LAN play and directing players to our upgraded Battle.net service was the best option to ensure a quality multiplayer experience with StarCraft II and safeguard against piracy."

We all know that B.net blows. So the "quality MP experience" angle is utter nonsense. As for safeguarding against piracy, the best safeguard against piracy is to make a great game that everyone wants to play over the net. Even so, THERE WILL BE A PIRATE COPY OF SC2 1.0 AS SOON AS IT HITS SHELVES. This is a fact of gaming, for PC, 360, PS3, and Wii games. STOP PUNISHING US AND GET TO KNOW YOUR BUSINESS!
