Prototype is the First Video Game to Feature Neural-THX 7.1 Surround - Image 1

Video games have made major strides in visuals thanks to landmark games like Gears of War and Heavenly Sword so it's just about time it made strides in the audio quality department as well. This is what Sierra's new game, Prototype, sets out to do.

Prototype (PC, 360, PS3) will be the first game ever to feature Neural-THX 7.1 Surround sound. With it, gamers will be able extend their audio setup with two additional speakers. The additional speakers will allow for a 360-degree audio experience.

The game will have elements where sound will play a role, so having speakers set up in front, beside and behind the gamer will make for a more interactive environment. This will allow gamers to be able to react more easily to audio cues from the game.

A gunshot from behind, for example, will be played from the speaker behind the gamer, making the experience more realistic. The Neural-THX 7.1 Surround system will be demonstrated at the 2008 Consumer Electronics Show at the THX booth.

 » Well...

Unfortunately Sierra hasn't a good game in years. :(
Also it will NOT!@#!)*!)@(*%)(!*@# I repeat it will NOT be the first console game to feature 7.1. Resistance beat them to the chase on that one. A launch title. Just because its THX doesnt really make it all that better. There have been many movies with amazing sound that are not THX certified. Best part is... ALMOST NO GAMERS HAVE A FUNCTIONAL 7.1 SOUND SYSTEM! Don't post just to tell me "I have it and therefore lots of people do" because just because a couple people chime in, doesnt represent anything. Most gamers dont even have HDTV's. Get past that one and we'll try again.

Better yet... lets start making quality games instead of focusing on the sound or visuals... People like to think its about the game, but people like to think alot of things.

I would assume it's different, possibly more complex than your standard 7.1 surround like Dolby Digital Plus, DTS-HD, Dolby TrueHD...

 » 7.1?

Best part is, no games render their audio in those formats. Besides TrueHD and DTS-HD support many more channels than 7.1 and are lossless. What much else is there to add? Its the game engine and the quality of the sound files which determine the overall quality of the game's sound.

Check out the THX website

All it does is allow devs to move up to 7.1. Guess what THX, we're already there. Thanks, but no thanks.

» But the PS3 already has lots of 7.1 games

Heaps of PS3 games are true 7.1 discrete, alot of firstparty ones even boast PCM sound.

Not too sure what Sierra is talking about

Also.. I've got 5 speakers (and a sub) and I have a hard time finding places for them all, what would I do with 7!?

 » and?

if its on the 360 no one will be able to use it, because the 360 doesnt support 7.1, also it would meen buying a new decoder, to support the 7.1 interface
