Charttrack: DS and PSP dominate 2007's overall console sales - Image 1 The UK's Chart Track has just sent in some interesting figures regarding last year's overall video game sales. The year 2007 saw a total of 75.9 million consoles sold, which equates to a considerable 16 percent boost since 2006.

With regards to games, Chart Track announces that software sales for the time period totalled £ 1.72 billion (US$ 3.37 billion), indicating a 26 percent per cent over 2006's records.

With regards to specifics systems, 2007's figures show that the Nintendo DS took the lead, followed along by the Sony PSP. Handhelds dominated last year's, claiming a third of the entire software units market. With regards for the top ten games of last year:

  • FIFA 08 (EA Sport)
  • Dr. Kawashima’s Brain Training (Nintendo)
  • Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare (Activision)
  • Pro Evolution Soccer 2008 (Konami)
  • More Brain Training from Dr Kawashima (Nintendo)
  • Halo 3 (Mircosoft)
  • The Simpsons Game (EA Games)
  • Wii Play (Nintendo)
  • Assassin’s Creed (Ubisoft)
  • WWE Smackdown vs Raw 2008 (THQ)
Paul Jackson, Director General of ELSPA, had this to say regarding Chart Track's 2007 end-year report:

We are thrilled to see the industry growing and software sales continuing to rise. This is a real testament to the industry, the creativity and the talent we have in the UK. There is, however, a chance to forget many of the problems the UK development sector faces with the pressure from the threat of international competition. We need to ensure that the UK creativity is able to continue to flourish and feed this demand, these figures should act as a reminder to us of the scale of our amazing industry and how we need to continue to work towards a healthier situation for one of the UK most lucrative creative industries.

The DS is not just for children. I don't have a DS, but what I played of it was pretty cool. I did have a PSP but there were only a few games on it I liked so I sold it.

 » RE What!?

The fact that you don't have a DS and only played a few games on the PSP proves nothing more than you're a moron who doesn't deserve to voice your opinion.

I personally hate the DS. Okay, maybe hate is too strong of a word, but the I prefer the big widescreen of the PSP to the 2 tiny screens of the DS. The DS feels too small in my hand (which actually hinders gameplay) and their online support is a joke where as the PSP I'm able to jump in and play, the hell with friend codes. The PSP has some mega kewl games such as Daxter, Killzone Liberation, Socom FTB, pursuit force, MGS portable Ops, Burnout legends, 2 GTAs, Silent Hill Origins, and more great titles such as Kingdom hearts, FFV Crisis core, a new clank game, God of war and others. So you can't say the system doesn't have a big list of great games.

While I do agree that the DS isn't just for children, i believe the system is more for the 'non-gamers' who want their bejewled, brain age and cooking mama. The same kind of demographic who powers the "online flash based games" numbers.

why do people say that the psp is a failure it is clearly selling like crazy? not as good a ds but ***** why do people give it a bad spin like it was going to fail.

i have, or had. both. i still own my psp. psp isnt about the games. its everything that has to do with entertainment in a portable(ish) package. and honestly i have to say that the ds is lacking in every area. it still uses cartrages which lacks in sound quality. it doesnt have an mp3 or video player that comes stock. same with the wifi internet. the graphics suck. comparable to n64 at best. the only thing it has thats better is a mic. touch screen really isnt worth it for me.

 » PSP is doing great

people think the PSP is "failing" because they are comparing it to the monster that is DS...and its software sales are abysmal.

The recent CES did feature a lot of good stuff coming to the PSP (the slim at least), such as Skype support, and a US release of its GPS accessory.

That, and I'm waiting for Crisis Core :)

Secret Agent Clank
Pursuit Force: Extreme Justice

i have one and its boring

they are both good, get both and stop trying to defend your system. It just depends on what kind of games you like. I like the psp because of all that i can do with it and all the good games, I also like the DS because i like to play with the touch screen and there is a few good games, i do think the DS could have been better power wise but i dont think thats what nintendo wanted they wanted an interactive system...

that prints money
