Microsoft Confirms Free Xbox Live on Certain Titles - Image 1During the weekend, rumors were circulating about Xbox Live Silver members getting access to free online play for certain cross-platform games. Well, more information has come to light, and the rumors happen to be true.

A Microsoft spokesperson recently told GameDaily the following:

Last week we announced that we were taking off the Gold-only restriction for multiplayer gaming over Games for Windows- LIVE. For a limited time, we are offering free online multiplayer on Xbox 360/ Games for Windows titles that offer LIVE cross platform play. This promotion won't last, so we encourage everyone to take advantage of it while they can

The spokesperson added that all multiplayer gaming on the Xbox 360 would be for Gold members only when the Xbox Live Experience rolls around.

Silver members who want to try out cross-platform play will be interested to learn that the said game mode is available on three titles: Lost Planet: Colonies (PC, Xbox 360), Shadowrun (Xbox 360, PC), and Universe at War (Xbox 360, PC). Just remember to hurry, as we don't know how long this free play will last.

And XBL traffic feels no effect whatsoever.

Yeah, um three of some of the lowest performing XBL titles. None of which I own. I'm sure the Silver member in my house will be all over this... NOT.

at least a step in the right direction. The PSN shows that such service can also be provided with no costs. I think we all paid enough already for the console and the game, whatever console we own.

"For a limited time,"

This is just like those free months of premium service cable companies give out to get people hooked so they will order the premium service once the promotion is over.

Don't get your hopes up, Microsoft is not making this permanent.

Aside from that, I'm not going to get into the whole free v. fee argument here.
