Introversion Software has just released patch v1.2 for DEFCON: Everybody Dies. For those who have been living in a basement under the control of terrorist dwarves, DEFCON is a real-time strategy game where you'll find yourself squat in the middle of a Global Thermonuclear War.

Now, you must manage a full-on global nuclear war exchange and attempt to minimize the casualties in a war that threatens to destroy the entire planet (inspired by the Cold War era, of course). Honestly, it seems doomed to fail, but if you're really THAT good, surely you can manage thermonuclear war, right? Hahaha.

The game has been out since September 29, and to keep the fire burning (so they say), Introversion has released patch v1.2 which introduces a major change: a new mod support system. Before you get all excited about giving DEFCON a total graphical overhaul, you should know that this patch is for the boxed version of DEFCON. So if you got the Steam release of the game, sorry folks but this patch wouldn't work for you.

Changelog:
  • New MOD support system
Additional info on Mod system:
  • Mods can be loaded and unloaded in-game from a new MODs window.
  • Mod authors can provide details on their MOD: a screenshot and a data file, which will be shown in the MODs window when the mod is selected.
  • Two types of MOD: Critical MOD: required by all players connecting and Non-critical MOD: graphical/audio only mod
Additional minor MOD support:
  • Image "data/graphics/explosion.bmp" is now only used by Explosions. (Previously it was used to render population and radiation, making it impossible to mod explosion graphics without modding those too.)
  • New preferences option : RenderNodes (very useful for people making new maps for Defcon.)
  • Set this option to 1 (by editing your preferences.txt file) to render the Nodes used in-game. Red = AI Target, Green = AI Placement, White = Travel
  • The white lines represent the possible routes ships can sail along.
And just a few more reminders, if you already have a team selected, the Red AI Target markers will fill to indicate a sensible target within striking range of any enemy. Also, required Critical mods will be activated once you join a game server, so if you haven't installed these mods yet, you won't be able to get into the server. As for the server browser, it now dons a new column to show which mods are currently running.

Don't fancy the whole thermonuclear thingamajig in DEFCON? Oh well, you can always check out other real-time strategy games, like Tiny Warz, or say, Space Empires V? But then again, that's just me.
