If you've been even remotely tied to the PC gaming scene in the past decade or so, you'll know who Blizzard is and that their games command so much passion in the platform. When Diablo 3 was announced last week, everyone was excited but not all of us were happy after the gameplay demos. The reason for a lot of people is the paradigm shift in art styles. The Diablo series has always been known for its dark art style and gothic look which matched the game's storyline. A lot of people were surprised, and disappointed even, to see that Diablo 3's environments seem more light than ever before with cleaner textures and "cartoon-ish" character models. Some have blamed the influence of the MMO juggernaut World of Warcraft for this shift in art styles that they labeled as "unrealistic". A petition has been raised by thousands of series fans to have Blizzard rethink its strategies in presentation. Diablo 3 producer Keith Lee, however, offered Blizzard's side on the matter. In essence, the primary motivation for this change were the elements of contrast and diversity. “One of the things that we considered when we were working on the visuals for Diablo 3 is the fact that color is your friend," he says. "We feel that color actually helps to create a lot of highlights in the game so that there is contrast." "A great analogy is like in Lord of the Rings — not everything is dark," Lee adds. "It allows you to see what a creepy dungeon can be like but if everything is dark it doesn’t allow you to have a lot of contrast.” The producer added that Blizzard gives great consideration to what its fans have to say. However, he remained adamant in their team's stand and concluded with the words “we don’t want everything to look the same and that’s really what we’re trying to aim for.” This blogger can see where the fans are coming from, but arguing about realism in art styles? Come on, the realism stopped the moment we fought our first skeletons in the original Diablo. What do you think? |

» I dunno
I actually like the gameplay footage. I think the new style will work just fine.

» The creative process and fanservice can't always get along
I, too, was disappointed by the art style used in the gameplay videos. It didn't feel quite right, but I wasn't sure until I watched the three that were available. It wasn't until the last video that I realized that I felt like I was watching a new Warcraft game instead of something that was set in the Diablo universe. I also suspected that the success of WoW had something to do with this shift in style, however, I'll try to give the benefit of the doubt given the reasoning presented in this article.
As fans we have to remember that the developers of our games tend to be fans of their own work as well. Sure they want to flex their creative muscles, but they also know what they loved about the previous games that they created. It's when marketing and other external forces come in that things get screwed up pretty bad. For now, let's just hope that they were able to pull off the what they've done so far really well, and that when we're playing, we'll actually enjoy what they've done with their ideas on contrast.
I just wish they kept rendering pretty close to D2.

My personal belief is that people need to just accept it. Blizzard knows a little more about making great games than any one of the people who has signed the petition, so I trust that they will do what is right. Also, just because a game is cartoonish doesn't mean that it is going to be bad, or the theme of the game is going to change any. Team Fortress 2 is basically one giant cartoon, but its still a nice violent team shooter. Just because we have some color other than multiple shades of grey in a game for once doesn't mean that there is going to be anything wrong with it. As he says in the comment "color actually helps to create a lot of highlights in the game so that there is contrast." If all the colors were the same then there wouldn't be any difference at all throughout the world, and that would most likely just get really boring or irritating.

» This isnt a response
Ugh, this is NOT a response to the outcry. The interview was done at WWI which is BEFORE the petition etc even existed.
Kinda getting sick of people reporting it as a response from blizzard considering they havent actually said anything yet in response. You cant respond to something before you know it exists.

Well how much of it have we really seen? I loved D2 - would I hate a bit more of a creative jab with the environments in D3? Probably not as long as they get the mix right. I want some (like most) of the dungeons to be dark and gritty...that feeling that the place you're in isn't meant to welcome you home (you don't expect bugs bunny to jump up and say "what's up doc?")...instead the presence of evil should be conveyed in a way that is kinda difficult to explain.
Then again I don't want the entire world feeling the same way - would be nice to mix things up a little but to also avoid the creative direction going too far down the WoW path....
