Nintendo does have a lot of celebrating to do cos the past couple of years have been really good for them. Not only did their gaming consoles (DS and Wii) give them much source of pride -- and profit -- they have also been just recognized as one of the world's most reputable companies, landing in at an impressive #6.

Forbes List - Image 1

The list was published by Forbes via the Reputation Institute, and reflected essentially the most popular companies in town. With the monthly hardware and sales figures coming out with either a DS or a Wii on top, save for a couple of exceptional months which went to the PS3, it's no surprise that Nintendo would be comfortably seated at the front row.

After all, the Wii holds a record of50.39 million units sold from its launch in late 2008. Meanwhile, the DS so far has sold 101.78 million units to date. Therefore, for the year 2008 alone, Nintendo took home a staggering 1.8 trillion yen (around US$ 18.5 billion) in net sales, earning them an annual income of 279 billion.

If you're looking for Microsoft and Sony on the list, don't worry, they're there too, albeit at a pretty distant spot from Nintendo (with a Computer Industry category). Microsoft is at #30 (Computer), while Sony, for some odd reason is at #126, under the category of Electrical & Electronics.

Other notable bigwigs that were overtaken by Nintendo would be Walt Disney, Pepsi and Apple (at #52). You can check out the rest of the link by clicking on the Source below.

I can't help but notice that they list IKEA as #2. How serious are we supposed to take a list when the 2nd best company on its list can't even make a chair right?

Article says it reflects popularity....so i'm guessing this is pretty skewed list, lot's of ppl do buy ikea tho....

Nintendo products are still popular? I see dozens of Wii and DSi units littering store shelves pretty much every store I go to. Since they're so overpriced yet horribly obsolete, they just don't sell without faked shortages.

I'm really not surprised by Sony's horrible performance. I bought a Sony Cybershot once. It started malfunctioning after a few weeks. Customer support was horrible! The camera was well taken care of yet there seemed to be a problem with the software and sometimes the camera would just shut down after second of turning it on. Sony wanted to charge me for a repair, even though it was under their warranty, and after insisting they accepted to fix it for free (though I did have to pay like 5 dollars or shipping). It didn't take 2 weeks after the repair and it started malfunctioning again.

Bought a Fuji Finepix few weeks later, no problem at all (and menu options, picture quality, ect. is way better, and camera was cheaper). Also, this month I won a canon sd 1100 camera on a raffle, also pretty good (though it like how it feel better, picture quality doesn't compare to the finepix (kinda like the sony cybershot)).

And my PS3? Good quality I could say, haven't had any problems except a few freezes (once or twice a month), which is better than the 360s common RROD (though honestly, i've never had monthly freezes on the ps2, ps1, n64, gamecube, snes, gba, gbc, so im a bit dissappointed with sony this time).

Nintendo #6 most reputable? not sure about that. they make really good hardware, and in the past (not sure now, i don't have a wii) they always delivered top quality software of higher standard than than sony or ms.they've kept most of their promises (something both sony and ms have a hard time too). they also promise a bright future to their shareholders ;).

and my experience has been the opposite...everything i've bought from sony has been abused and put through hell and still functions fine. First started with my discman waaaay back when....had it for 3 years, dropped many times, it rolled down a flight of stairs and busted the lid off, but I could still put it on and have it play.

My PSP has been dropped at least 7 times from 4+ ft, has been sat on way too many times to count, and has been used everyday since launch....still works fine, could use a new faceplate though...

Same goes with my cybershot and headphones, etc....

I couldn't say how their customer service is, cause i've never had to deal with them myself.

I don't think I've EVER had a sony product break. Well, there was a walkman that stopped working after 6 years. It was basically worthless anyway.

but I totally forgot, I do remember having to turn my buddies launch PS1 upside down in order for it to read discs....but other than that it was fine :P

 » Sony and their products

I know the someone very high up in the company that provides heat syncs to Sony for their computers and he was telling me how they by the cheapest of the cheap for their products.

Also, this list probably represents a company's stability over the course of it's entire lifespan. Nintendo's stock is pretty stable; they have a hand in a few different sub-markets of the video game industry and have dominated hand held sales for over 20 years giving them a steady stream of income even during the Gamecube reign. Furthermore they always produce within the means of actually attaining profit unlike Sony and Microsoft who still lose money on every console sale.
