Mark Rein spills details: PhysX, SIXAXIS on Unreal Tournament 3 - Image 1While Unreal Tournament III (Microsoft Xbox 360, Sony PlayStation 3, Windows PC) straps up for release next week, LAN centric Omega Sektor in Birmingham played guest to Epic Games' celebration of versions for the Sony PlayStation 3 and Windows PC. Epic Games' vice president and common spokesperson for the third iteration of the UT series, Mark Rein, was present for an interview and he spilled a few details on additional features in the final game.

First up is PhysX which is AGEIA's hardware physics solution for today's modern machines. The Unreal Tournament 3 beta demo exhibited nothing out of the ordinary with or without a PhysX physics processing unit (PPU). Later it was revealed that the final game would only have significant PhysX features enabled on certain maps.

Rein was able to put a few words in about the added physics content, saying that PhysX-enabled PCs were a "very small subset" of the player base and suggested that the PhysX only features stood as bonus content only. "In terms of gameplay though I suppose it’s pretty good, so we just wanted to give PhysX card owners a little something extra," Rein added.

On the Sony PS3 front, more details on SIXAXIS controls were hinted at. Tilt-sensing controls seems to be tied to hoverboard steering and for navigating a Redeemer tactical nuke, though aiming seems to be out of the picture (as was previously revealed). Expect to see these features when the game launches in North America on November 19 and Europe on November 23 on Microsoft Windows. Sony PlayStation 3 and Microsoft Xbox 360 version to come later in 2008.

 » i like sixaxis but

if used in wrong situations like aiming, it sucks.
so just if you are using sixaxis motion, just also give the option to turn it off and use the analog stick instead as to not suffer the same consequence with the arrogance of the Factor5 and its flop game Lair (great game, great graphics, stupid devs killed their own product, didnt even bother to patch it to save their butt).

 » sixAxis

sixaxis is good for gesture controls and nothing more. steering is realy bad with it , even if its adjustble.
its well implemented in R:FoM shake to get rid of the enemy or 'Uncharted; get a balance.
i would like to see a "hard pull for 18o° turn" like in lair (only good sixAxis feature)

 » motion for me please

Agree I only use motion sensing in Motorstorm as well it's brilliant for flying and steering and probably alot more if the developers put in some effort.

I think the people who have trouble with motion sensing are those who are hardcore thumbstick twiddlers ie ex PS2 or Xbox gamers, seems like once you played for years with thumbsticks the arms freeze up or people forget how to move their arms or something ?? many seem to have trouble adjusting for some reason ?? these people then review sixaxis motion games and say it's lousey cause they cant adapt - one reviewer claimes he could not ever get a place in motorstorm with motion controll - hilarious i would have to try to not win every race.

Of course developers should provide a options to play with thumbsticks for these people who are unable to adapt or who prefer them.

UT3 WAS on my must get list BUT if it does not have motion based aiming as i hoped ? well guess i will just have to wait for an FPS game that does. sorry epic but most other PS3 games have motion steering , and if you can't up the bar by providing motion based aiming as well then why should i get UT3 as opposed to starwars, or Blazing angles II
rachet and clank etc ??.
