Max Payne - Image 1Variety reports that Twentieth Century Fox has set its sights on Mark Wahlberg to play the titular role in the upcoming big screen adaptation of Max Payne. The Max Payne movie will be directed by John Moore, who also helmed last year's The Omen remake. This film is the latest in a string of big-budget video game adaptations for the big screen.

Negotiations are reportedly going on between Wahlberg and Twentieth Century Fox. The Variety piece describes Payne as a man "haunted by the tragic loss of his family and has little regard for rules as he investigates a series of mysterious murders. He finds himself up against an adversary bent on destroying Max and the streets he protects."

No word yet on whether the movie will be based on the first Max Payne game, on Max Payne 2: The Fall of Max Payne, or an amalgamation of the two. Since this is Hollywood, expect a lot of explosions and bullet time sequences. Filming is set to begin next year.
