Modern Warfare 2 - Image 1

If you've gotten used to the four-player campaign co-op in Call of Duty: World at War, try to get over it if you're also planning to get Modern Warfare 2. The latter not only won't support four-player co-op, it won't even have a campaign co-op mode at all. Instead it'll have a two-player Special Ops mode.

“We don’t do co-op in our story because we’re crafting a very specific experience and we don’t want to ruin that by cramming co-op into it," said Infinity Ward's Robert "fourzerotwo" Bowling to VideoGamer. " We take the moments that work really well with co-op, we bring them out and we put them in Special Ops.”

“Sometimes moments get toned down because they don’t fit with the pacing of the experience you’re trying to deliver. There (in Special Ops) it’s all about fun. It’s about playing over and over again, getting a better time – you’ll have a time at the end of it – it’s about challenging a friend going in on co-op and trying to beat it on veteran.”

Bowling also explained the decision to go with two players: "Two player seemed to be the magic number for co-op. That’s when it stayed really fun and intense without becoming a clusterf**k of things. We just found that two-players was the most fun.”

Modern Warfare 2 will be out November 10 on Xbox 360, PS3, and PC.

 » Umm yea

They pretty much explained this in the June Game Informer which came out like a month ago, and which you guys had an article on lol. No story coop, just Special Forces

 » But of course...

...this won't change that everyone and everyone's brother are going to be singing endless praises for Infinity Ward, and how much better Modern Warfare is than Call of Duty from Treyarch. :-O

And, I think it's less that "...two players was the most fun", and more that "We didn't have time left to work on a REAL co-op mode, or playtest for more than 2 users".

 » I dont think so

They went into detail about it in the GI issue, they explained how coop just wasn't compatible with their story and really took you out of it. Which is really what I feel when I play any game in coop, I make sure to never play any game the first time thru in coop mode no matter how many people ask me, because when I'm playing with a buddy and screaming and laughing my ass off I just can't pay attention to the game itself.

IDK I guess 4 player coop wouldn't have hurt anybody, but if it didn't make sense to them then oh well. Special Forces looks pretty badass anyway

 » Level and game design

The sad part is, when a level and game are designed to make the most out of cooperative play, they feel empty and half-done when playing alone. Gears of War suffers from this tremendously as does Resident Evil 5.

When you design a game and levels for single player, porting in another player for coop makes the gameplay feel.... well, it feels tacked on: World at War.

I say, keep them separate with different but equal attention and love for each mode. Make single player great AND make coop great.

» I wish it did have 4 player story mode

I like the idea of the Mile High Club type scenarios, but I still dug the idea of being able to play the game on Veteran in story mode with my friends ala Halo 3/GoW(I know its a 2-player game but its still story co-op). Dunno maybe its just me who likes to play the games on the harder difficulties with friends.
