Diablo III - Image 1

German gaming site GamersUnity is reporting that a hastily deleted post on the official Diablo III forums has confirmed that the game will not be carrying a LAN play feature just like StarCraft II.

The post, reportedly made by a Battle.Net community manager, posits the same reasons that LAN play is being disabled in StarCraft II: to curb piracy. Here's a snippet off the deleted post:

More so than overbearing/invasive anti-piracy measures that would affect everyone who buys the game regardless of how they're going to play it instead of just those that may want a LAN feature? I would doubt it.

I don't know a lot about it, Diablo III isn't really facing the brunt of the Battle.net 2.0 features just yet, but I think that removing LAN in an attempt to avoid more severe anti-piracy measures is pretty cool. We're saying "Hey, we're pretty sure you're going to love our game. The multiplayer is really the best part though. In order to get in on that that we'd just like to make sure you bought the game. Cool?

This has yet to be confirmed officially by Blizzard, but given their push to turn Battle.Net into an even bigger multiplayer hub for their titles than it was before, I wouldn't be surprised if it turns out to be true.

One of the things that I must say is that I am disappointed. I have always had lan parties for Diablo II and Starcraft now they are taking that away I hate playing on battlenet. The only people I know that play on it now are immature little kids who can't tell the diffrence between their mother a a load of crap.

"The only people I know that play on it now are immature little kids who can't tell the diffrence between their mother a a load of crap. "

Now you offended me. I play Diablo 2 on Battle.net D2 since it was released. I always play about 3~5months then stop for a year. It is a lot more fun, because battle.net is kinda unhackable (ok, MapHack i think is fair lol) but most of dupes, item duplicator etc is BS, just retarded people trying to scam retarded people.

Anyways, in my entire life, i never played LAN so i really do not care about it and i can't understand why you people are making so much noise.

Anyways, i totally with Relys in this point:
"I shouldn't have to pay for 2 copies if I'm playing with my dad or something."

Creating an inconvenience for the customer will just encourage people to use the cracked version of the game.

Seriously, no LAN play is bull*****. And I shouldn't have to pay for 2 copies if I'm playing with my dad or something.

» Stupid Developer BS. Don't buy into it.

So basically, LAN play (which is something the players want) is going to be removed "so that they dont have to implement nasty DRM". How about this:

1) Leave LAN play alone
2) Don't use stupid ass DRM. I pay for my games, now leave me alone.
3) Everyone happy.

This is NO LAN is absolute bull*****.....to curb piracy.....complete bull***** man i want my lan i have mutiple computers at home and a lan would be great for that why use bnet when people are within reach for a better faster more reliable connection...
neXT NO DRM Goddamnit
if this game has drm say goodbye to a good number of customers........i hate DRM

No, no. I'm not saying Blizzard is stupid, I'm saying that developers always pull this "stupid BS" about not having a choice. They don't HAVE to include DRM, they WANT to include DRM, even if the customers who are expected to buy the game DO NOT WANT IT.

I think we all know that StarCraft II, when it is finally released someday, is going to be the RTS killers. Everyone will define RTS as "Pre-SC2" and "Post-SC2". Moral of the story is, I think SC2 is going to sell more copies than SC1 and D1 combined. So please cut down on the piracy drama, Blizzard.

Diablo III will be the biggest flop of all time for Blizzard.

Sure, strait out of the box there will probably be every horror that most competant gamers will hate with a passion. DRM, no LAN, Battle.net only access, security question that only someone of the proper age group would know the answer to being a log-on "safety" measure, skin graft & urinalysis; everything that makes "just sitting down and playing the damn thing" that much more of a hassle.

When the facts are, both supported (those that bought the game) and unsupported (simply, pirates) will find a way around these obnoxious means to futilely control their (in this case Blizzard) intellectual property.

Talk about an excessive waste of resources... All the man hours wasted trying to keep people from stealing their software, then the added packaging and printing of the medium (growing more due to the bloated space needed for DRM & other theft software).

I mean, you could save scads of cash by just stopping the bull***** and offering the software (not just Blizzard) at a considerably lesser price, thus negating the need/lust for piracy (or any other excuse they need for restricting functionality).

Look at it this way... Say the game is $60US... One copy. Now, remove all the DRM/Piracy garbage and copy & paste the already existing code for LAN (or any other function that always accompanies these kind of games), print the game onto 1 single layered DVD and offer it for $20US.

Personally, I would have no problem purchasing 3 copies of the game for me & my kids to play, had this scenerio played out.

Come On for *****'s Sake!!! Diablo 2, it's expansion and a walk through book STILL sells for $40US!!! And its how old?

Get over it corporate America!!! The, "Let's ***** the consumer silly" party is over
