Not a shocker: BioShock requirements are hefty

BioShock PC requirements are hefty - Image 1 It was almost certain that, to play a game filled with a lot of water and freaky people in diving outfits, you'd need a powerful computer. BioShock (PC, Xbox 360) is getting a lot of buzz for both its PC and Xbox 360 incarnations. For folks who want to play the game on their PCs, however, be warned: you may need to upgrade your stuff.

2K Games recently revealed the PC requirements for Irrational Games' BioShock and, to put it simply, they're pretty hefty:

Operating Systems:

Minimum System Requirements:
  • CPU: Pentium 4 2.4GHz Single Core processor
  • System RAM: 1GB
  • Video Card: Direct X 9.0c compliant video card with 128MB RAM (NVIDIA 6600 or better/ATI X1300 or better, excluding ATI X1550).
  • Sound Card: 100% direct X 9.0c compatible sound card
  • Hard disc space: 8GB free space
Recommended System Requirements:
  • CPU: Intel Core 2 Duo processor
  • System RAM: 2GB
  • Video card:
    • DX9: Direct X 9.0c compliant video card with 512MB RAM (NVIDIA GeForce 7900 GT or better)
    • DX10: NVIDIA GeForce 8600 or better
  • Sound Card: Sound Blaster X-Fi series (Optimized for use with Creative Labs EAX ADVANCED HD 4.0 or EAX ADVANCED HD 5.0 compatible sound cards)
You'll also need an internet connection to register the game for play, but if you're reading this, then there's a good chance you won't have to worry about that. In any case, how does your current gaming rig compare? Will you upgrade your PC for BioShock, or will you pick up the Xbox 360 version instead?

Hey QJ you know this just makes you sound like a bunch of xbox360 fanboys. I can build a computer for $553 to run this game at max settings. Hefty requirements my ass. Almost every hermit is going to be able to play this at max in DX9. This does give you the option to play in DX10 as well. Man QJ you have been losing more and more credibility as days go on. Your supposed to be non bias but your obviously not. We know what side you root for.

thats not that bad for a next-gen game. i just hope that it works on my ATI 2900 XT. unlike the *****ty lost planet port that wouldn't work at all thanks to nvidia.

How are these "hefty" requirements?? It sounds like Bioshock will run on most gaming machines from the past couple years. Is it just me or does it seem like QJ is reaching for news.

Not very hefy. I'm running an AMD 3800 CPU and a 7900 GS graphics card and I'm pretty sure that BioShock will run in max settings just fine.

Agreed with posts above, Ive had my system for quite awhile and it will still play this no problem. Only my video card, 7800 GTX, doest fit the required but is just under it at least.

I am in the boat where I need an upgrade of about 240 dollars to my current system to play the game at the recommended requirements, and quite a few of my friends are as well.

Not hefty to you perhaps, but 200+ dollars isn't anything to sneeze at for me, a 24 year old working student. Its a pricey upgrade, worth half the original value of my rig.

The sober tone doesn't imply to me that it is stupid or frustrating to upgrade. This doesn't seem biased to me.
