Yet again Electronic Arts has to settle with the consequences of running strict digital rights management (DRM) software with its computer games. It appears that the constant complaints of SecuROM crashing legitimate users' PCs has hit a sound note with the publisher.

EA Support has just posted a fix for the Command & Conquer 3: Kane's Wrath patch version 1.01, which if not fixed will make sure Windows Explorer stalls when you right-click any executable file.

Yes - any. We have heard reports through discussions that the new patch comes with a security fix for SecuROM, and upon patching, it renders the right-click mechanic of Windows into the equivalent of depressing the big red flashing button that says, "Nuke me and my ancestry."

For the record, all news on SecuROM hasn't exactly been bump-free - BioShock, Mass Effect, Alone in the Dark, and Spore and what-have-yous are all collecting minimal sales simply because no one wants a hidden, persistent, and now purposely intrusive DRM lurking in the Windows kernel. I mean, I wouldn't either.
