Ever since Rockstar's highly lucrative Grand Theft Auto franchise started raking in the cash, there have been rumors that it was going to be adapted for the silver screen. Heck, even rapper Eminem was rumored to be attached to a GTA movie at one time. Rockstar, on the other hand, has deflected all rumors and offers so far. Why? Because they need to protect their baby from being misrepresented by a suck-tastic movie made only to capitalize on the series' accomplishments. Here's what Rockstar co-founder and VP Dan Houser told the LA Times: It seems obvious to us that maintaining the long term integrity of any entertainment property has been dependent on not making substandard spin-off products to people whose primary interest is making a quick buck. If we ever decide to do a film, it will be because we have resolved our creative doubts, and while retaining enough control to ensure that if the movie is terrible, at least we will know we ruined the property ourselves. Good call. Houser also expressed doubts that a two-hour movie would be enough to encompass the "massive in scope and structurally complex" GTA games. If you really want to see a GTA "movie", though, just play the games. If you stick to the story missions I'd say that's pretty close to a cinematic experience already. Related articles:

I really don't see a movie being fun to watch. The game's, ever since 3, were movies. YOU were the one who chose the general order to do the missions in and when to do them, and you chose how to approach the missions and what roads to take, etc.
A film just can't capture that.

wouldn't it basically be the same as watching an episode of 24? maybe they would film it from the police's point of view, trying to catch a guy who mows down pedestrians in a tractor.

Let's hope they don't make a movie. I don't see a GTA movie turning out that well. Honestly the games are made extremely well and playing through the story is way more immersive than watching any GTA movie.

» It might even work
Well, I say it would be rather easy (at least considering the starting point) to make a good GTA movie. For example first, the main character is a small rogue, but his role starts getting bigger and bigger. Criminals, guns, polices, car chases... are at least a good beginning for a watchable action thriller movie. But of course it could turn out to be a bad Hollywood movie, again.

they do it in alot of gangster stories/movies
they do it in alot of gangster stories/movies
» Would have to use same point-of-reference
I think a GTA movie could only distinguish itself (from any OTHER gangster movie) if they played GTA's primary conceits "for real". In other words, just like the Watchmen movie 'goes for broke' on the concept of an alternate timeline/reality; GTA would need to do the same with it's 'self-mockery world'. How many times have you stopped to listen to GTA radio just for the comedic aspects? Or watched the TV in GTA IV? --If a hyper-violent gangster movie is set against a 'living backdrop' of this same type of sensibility, I think it could work. ....But it has to be played much more po-faced like Watchmen (which is believing 100% in its own world), and less 'total farce' like Shoot Em Up (which is making total fun of its own reality).

There's really nothing in GTA that makes it stand out from a thousand other action films, i mean at least Tomb Raider, Street Fighter, Resident Evil etc. Have something different about them, with GTA you just have to make sure you got some fighting and driving with a criminal making you do things and it really doesn't matter what it's called.

Hey guys, who remembers this GTA2 movie that was made for advertising the game? It was actually really cool, only 8 minutes long.

Is what it would be. GTA is not "game to movie" material at all. It would just be every kind of cliche imaginable crammed into a generic film. Probably because the games already feel like movies. Its not like other games that would be interesting in film form that already feel like movies...like God of War.

I like the fact that Houser comes out saying exactly how it is, rather then throwing a bunch of words together that really dont tell us crap. I like Rockstar a little bit more after reading that.

» GTA movie doesn't make sense...
the allure is to be able to control the action of these psychopaths. Hollywood has made GTA movies for decades.
It makes as much sense as making a video game to capitalize on the video game movie.

» In the city
A tv series is the only possible way GTA could work on screen because GTA isn't about the characters it's more about the city as a whole and a 2 hour film just couldn't show that, but a tv series has a better chance to express it.. Obviously it's unlikely to happen but there it is.

The guy has brains. Capcom should have thought the same thing when the original Street Fighter movie was announced, for God's sake.

» Good idea rockstar...
The GTA games have had some solid stories behind them but most, if not all, game to movie conversions that I know about haven't done too well.
