The Russians are angry. Apparently, they did not like how the controversial airport massacre level in Activision's blockbuster game was named the "No Russian" mission. To express their anger, they have ordered the recall of all the console versions of Modern Warfare 2 (Xbox 360, PS3, and PC) from their store shelves.

The said level has got the Russian gaming public in an uproar, along with a number of their politicians. They raised protest over how the Russian armed forces were depicted as a bunch of terrorists who came and invaded the United States, and putting up statues of dead terrorists all over Washington D.C.

I'm not a terrorist, I swear!!!

Other Russian websites, such as GotPS3, criticized the game for supposedly harboring a dominant preference towards the American culture, and in the process disregarding other cultures, particularly theirs.

For their part, Infinity Ward has since released an official patch for the PC and Steam versions. This patch takes out the said level completely from the game. Activision has also submitted a censored version to the Russian government, with the "No Russian" level also taken out. If it is approved, gamers can go back to enjoying the sound of gunfire on their consoles in less than a month.

We'll keep you posted on this.

Get over it.

   Re: Dougie321 - 5 days ago
 » Exactly

What about movies and tv shows that make russians (infact any country) look like terrorists, but because its a video game it gets this sort of crap?
by symbyosis - 7 days ago
 » lol

I really would like to play a video game from the BAD GUYS perspective, and that the game has all over it all these warning lables that YOU as the consumer are SOLELY responsible for what you see because it WILL offend you. Why couldn't they see it as "wow america still fear the Red Army" ? They are much bigger and stronger than us.

by Oracle - 7 days ago
 » That's a good idea

I do want to play a game where you slaughter Americans, though technically you would be the bad guys.

freedom fighter = terrorist

Just because you're sore that Russia gets their ass kicked in a VIDEO GAME, it doesn't mean it's a bad game.

 » In most games!!!

There is someone killing someone whether they are american or not, heck most games are Americans against Americans so what exactly is the problem!!! They don't care to be one American killing another American but let the other person be Russian, stupid crybabies

I knew this game game would be banned somewhere because of that Mission.

Oh well, it's not like IW is sitting on $301 million+ right now, no big deal if Russia misses out... =P

Attempting the best I can not to be a complete tool but... How many people in Russia can actually afford this game and the PC / Console to play it?

 » idiot...

People have a complete wrong image from Russia. They still think everything is communistic there. They think they are underdeveloped, uneducated and oppressed.

That's just wrong. Russia may have their problems, Putin to name one, but it certainly developed a lot since the cold war. People are acutally pretty capitalistic now. Have you seem the luxury hotels and the clubs?

Re: damonous - 6 days ago
 » 'Free'?

Silver-Tiger, do you at all see the irony in your statement? --This is an article about *the Russian Government* banning a game and **pulling the games from store shelves** because of the way that the Russians are portrayed in the game. Doh!! (It's not even for a moralistic reason.) Heck, I think it serves Infinity Ward right for putting something that controversially stupid in such a mass-market game (playing the role of the bad guys and shooting innocents). But, it's rather humorous to hear you make a statement about 'how far Russia has come', when the article is about their blatant, unabashed censorship over 'how they are depicted'. While I in no way condone the 'superior attitude' of most Americans, and the way our own culture has leaned toward communistic or socialistic principles (and the fallacy of 'true freedom'), *this* was not the article to say 'Russia's come a long way' with. ;-)

Re: ShinseiTom - 6 days ago
 » So....

they still have problems? Oh well. Silver was answering and clearing up a misconception about Russia's PEOPLE that many people have. And he even said that Russia still has problems.

I think this was a perfect article to say "they've come a long way" while still agreeing they have further to go (at least by our standards).

 » to be fair...

this game is totally pro America/britain ...and the russians are portrayed as warmongering phsycopaths ...Jike how many games movies are there that the badguy is a russian...and if i was russian im sure id be sick of it... and how many games movies are there that america is the villain...not an american but america itself.. barely any... so i understand where their coming from..

that said banning games and movies is wrong... the government should leave it to the consumers themselves to decide whether the game is offensive enough to outweigh the entertainment value.

also lol at heretiki thinkin people in russia cant afford video games...you wouldnt be american would you?...: )

 » WTF?!

This is stupid. It's just a damn game and war is supposed to be this violent.

C'mon that's an awesome mission.

by Relys - 6 days ago
 » Sorry.

I for one, have beaten the entire game, and I have to say that the mission "No Russian" was completely uncalled for.

I've stood up for violent video games for years now, but this was just very poor taste on Infinity Wards part.

Also, this game is VERY politically biased.

Re: StainlessSteve - 6 days ago
 » Dude

It's not like it's there just to portray Russia as some evil country. It's there because it's part of the story. It's not bad taste, although I'm sure IW knew it was going to be very controversial.

Re: Master Chef - 6 days ago
 » I agree

I don't find much in games unacceptable (except everything in Manhunt 2) but this level was unnecessary. I can't figure how else they could've done it tho, since it is pretty important for the story, it basically sets up the entire Russian invasion

Re: ShinseiTom - 6 days ago
 » I don't understand....

It's not real. They even allow you to skip this level if you think it offends you. What the hell more can you want?

And who CARES if it's biased? IT'S A GAME.

Damn, people sure are becoming feminine idiots, misreading the hole point of something... let me ask you if that part wasn't in the game would the russians had a reason to attack america, no... (there goes the story line for the game.)that part was there for the sole purpose of setting up the attack against america by terrorists, Yes those guys where terrorists except for the one american solder which was used as the main prop for the attack, in the end if you dont like the content of a game don't play it, if you are going to be offended by the game don't play it, and if you live in america, you got the option to skip a level if you would be offended, I don't know if that was included with the game or after the update, either way it was there from release day in america, was I offended when I saw america being destroyed, no, I thought it was a really interesting scenario, but of course I know the difference between real life and a game, for those who don't tuff luck deal with it.

Re: Master Chef - 6 days ago
 » Agreed on some points

They prob should have done it as a cutscene tho, or at least not had the level drag on as long as it did.

The level does present an interesting scenario tho, do you shoot the civilians to keep up appearances or not shoot the civilians? I chose not to

» shut the hell up american *****s

if there was ever a video game about bin laden killing *****ing america, you would all be pissed and cry like little *****es as you always do.dont say get o ver it while your butt still hurts from the 9/11 attack lmao.

» here's an honest man speaking

most of the kids here only speak about what ever pleasures them ignoring how it will and can effect anyone or country........if it affends someone something has triggered it...........most duma55 don't understand that..........................this is a war game of course it will be controversal, look at LittlebigPlanet anything more cute, cuddly than that can only be Tomagachi and it still had to remove out a song there as it may affend muslins
by YAMI ANUBIS X - 6 days ago
» Is it really uncalled for?

Heres the thing, this level is nothing spectacular and heres why.

Is driving a car and hitting people in GTA UNCALLED FOR?

Is killing people in videogames UNCALLED FOR?

How about Resident Evil 5 with the africans, was that UNCALLED FOR?

This level is being complained about cause RE5 was complained about for having the ability to kill africans. GTA series is complained about cause you can drive and squash people underneath tires or shoot them, beat them up, so on.

You know by the logic that the Airport is uncalled for, well if this is true, then all videogames with the ability to kill people should be banned from everywhere.

I mean if the airport level is completely uncalled for, then every single videogame out there in the world is completely uncalled for.

Re: houaruto - 5 days ago
» what you said was bullSh#? and totally uncalled for

shooting some virus mutated fictional people that does not resemble Africans much at all is different from shooting a specific race.................amercans shooting and running over americans is okay as you targeting another country............but depicting a specific race as evil that you had to kill and putting them in circustances that goes against their wishes in realistic actual horrible human act of war can hurt someone's pride

'In Soviet Russia...'

by ciderman - 5 days ago
 » Typical

Once again we have lots of comments from people who seem to think that unless "there" is just like the good ole USofA then it must be a backward, barbaric state.
The russian government is just like the US one, democratically elected, and so when a decision is made to censor a game due to an extremely insulting part of a game, what's your problem?
I mean, if a russian dev produced a game, showing Americans to be gun toting, rascist scum, who brutalise minorities and torture enemies of the state, the dev would be told "take it out" before publishing it, for fear of just the type of reaction the Russians had, or perhaps, more likely the reaction of all of the big chains in the US simply deciding to do the censorship for the government, just like they did with Manhunt 2.
No, the Russians were quite right to react the way they did if they felt aggrieved, and now IW are free to submit an altered version to the Russian censor, so no one is talking a massive crackdown on violent games.

Try and keep a little perspective here, and watch a little less Fox News, try BBC World Service instead!

   Re: Nickel.Colt - 5 days ago
 » RE: Typical

Yeah, that would be true for the majority of people,I myself wouldn't care. personally I would find it funny as hell considering that a vast majority of americans are "gun toting, rascist scum, who brutalise minorities and torture enemies of the state", to the guy above that posted free speech, free speech only exists when you talking to someone that isn't important, if that person is important you become a potential threat, and that right will be taken away.

 » From russia with love....

Russians are not that bad as you think. Our lives gets much closer to europe level (lived in europe, can compare). Sadly, the social infrastructure lacks a bit, but it's much better than 5 years ago.

For the question that we can't afford the game:
We can afford the game=) Most of the licensed PC games in russia costs around 10-15$, and the xbox version ~30$=) And if you want a pirated copy of the game - you can download it in less than 24 hours or buy in nearby store for 3-5$ (xbox - 10$). In russia piracy is a fact=( Even Windows Vista and XP without a juwel case costs 1$.

People here are not weapon maniacs. But they 'love' USA, like the USA 'loves' us. It's because mass media... A truly fearfull weapon... So don't listen to the news, and read forum posts)
