Lara Croft - Image 1If you're infatuated with Tomb Raider heroine Lara Croft and you want her to be yours alone, you'd better be ready to shell out the big bucks because she doesn't come cheap. About GBP £ 300 (US$ 600 million) should do the trick, though.

Publisher SCi recently announced that it is open to being taken over by third parties, and by extension all its intellectual property including the popular Tomb Raider franchise which has thrilled gamers across three gaming generations.

Share prices of SCi jumped from 37.5p to 375.5p immediately after word hit the streets on the company's willingness to sell out. The most eligible suitors at this point are industry heavyweights Warner Bros., Electronic Arts, and Ubisoft.

Preliminary talks are now being held with interested parties but no details have leaked from the negotiations. What's certain, though, is that CEO Jane Cavanagh and property mogul Robert Tchenguiz will cash in on a very sweet deal.

The Tomb Raider franchise celebrated its 10th anniversary this year with the release of Tomb Raider: Anniversary, which is a remake of the PSX original on the Microsoft Xbox 360, PC, and Sony PlayStation Portable.

Turner Broadcasting System has finally debuted the New Lara Croft series "ReVisioned!" Every week starting today till August 23, GameTap.com will be hosting the new series for free.

Keys to the Kingdom - Image 1

Starring Minnie Driver as the voice of Lara Croft, "ReVisioned" is part of the 10th year anniversary celebration of the first Tomb Raider game. Various artists will be giving their own visions of our heroine, who include Jim Lee (Batman: Hush), Warren Ellis (Transmetropolitan), Peter Chung (Aeon Flux), Gail Simone (Wonder Woman), Brian Pulido (Lady Death).

Michael Stackpole, Ivan Reis, Cully Hamner, Christos N. Gage, Louie Del Carmen, David Alvarez, and Six Point Harness are those lined up to provide their "ReVisioned" versions of Lady Croft. "Keys to the Kingdom" by Peter Chung is already up on the site.

Some of the artists will be attending the 2007 Comic-Con International in San Diego on July 28 to provide a forum and a behind-the-scenes look for fans. GameTap also pulled in special guests to sign autographs like Marvel editor-in-chief Joe Quesada, Darwyn Cooke (The Spirit), and Kevin Eastman (co-creator, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.)

The first season will be ReVisioning Tomb Raider with each new season featuring different gaming series from GameTap. It would be cool to see Ryu and the gang from Street Fighter being rendered by different artists. Check out the Read link below for Lara's first adventure in ReVisioned!

Minnie Driver - Image 1Behold the new voice of Tomb Raider: Minnie Driver! The new "ReVisioned" series based on Tomb Raider's Lara Croft was launched by GameTap Retrospective in honor of the 10th anniversary of the release of the first game.  For more Lara Croft fun, the 10th Anniversary celebration will also release the Tomb Raider: Anniversary game on the PS2, Xbox 360 and the PlayStation Portable.

Seems like this delectable diva has been busy in the animation industry recently.  She also stars in the new Simpsons movie.  Probably the most spectacular demonstration of her voice was when she played Carlotta in The Phantom of the Opera, an even bigger diva than she is in real life.  She has experience in voicing an animated character from before: she played Brooke Shields in South Park and Lady Eboshi in Princess Mononoke so our favorite heroine will be safe in her hands (and microphone.)

"ReVisioned" will premier on July 10 on GameTap.com.  A new episode will appear every week through August 23.  And hey, it's free!

Tomb Raider Anniversary - Image 1Eidos Interactive has announced that the much hyped remake, Tomb Raider Anniversary, has taken the top slot in a number of EU territories on both the PlayStation 2 and PC format charts. In the UK, the game is still at first place, and is a bestseller for the second week since it was released on June 1. The remake of the original 1996 game is also number one in Germany and France.

Given the warm welcome the game has received from the critics, and the game's faithful return to what people loved about the Tomb Raider franchise, this boost in sales isn't surprising. As Eurogamer's Kristan Reed said in his review of the game, this "celebratory remake" managed to improve on the original, without taking away what made it special.

We're now a bit curious as to how well the PSP version of the game fared in the EU. We'll update you about that as soon as we find the numbers.

Now that Eidos' Tomb Raider Anniversary is out on retail, this is probably the last trailer post on the game that you'll be seeing. Of course, last doesn't mean least, as these two videos do give you a decent preview/teaser of the best "remade" moments in the game. You'll see familiar stages, wolves, weird winged things, and that ever-so-memorable T-Rex.

Eidos Interactive's "Launch" trailer seems to be set on introducing the game to those who are new to the franchise, while the "Origins" video, as mentioned above, is set to give fans of the series good reason to, at the least, consider checking the remake out.

The embed's below, you know the drill.

Tomb Raider: Anniversary ships to North America - Image 1

After the recent release of Lara Croft Tomb Raider: Anniversary over GameStop's new bid for digital media distribution (as promised), Eidos and Crystal Dynamics are happy to announce that Lara Croft has been shipped over to North America.

According to the official press release sent in today, Tomb Raider: Anniversary is a celebration of Lady Croft's past and a "revived passion" for new adventures. The game includes more than 10 years of technical advances to take fans of the original into a nostalgic experience through expanded environments, enhanced puzzles, updated weapons and enhancements to character movements.

"Tomb Raider: Anniversary is an exciting adventure for fans of the franchise and a great introduction to Lara Croft for a whole new generation of consumers," said Eidos' director of marketing Matt Gorman. Lara Croft has become a billion dollar brand equity since the original game sold more than seven million copies back in 1996. Anniversary is taking PC fans in Europe by storm and should do just as well in America.

Copies that have been shipped are the PC and PS2 versions of the game, although the PC version is tagged for machines installed with Windows Vista. The PSP and Wii version releases have been announced as to be nearing soon.

Tomb Raider: Anniversary and GameTap - Image 1

For all the Lara Croft fans who haven't bought Tomb Raider: Anniversary, here's something you might like. GameTap, an online video game service, is offering the game as soon as its hard copy counterparts hit the stores.

The service also brings other perks to visitors like a "10 Years of Tomb Raider Retrospective" documentary (features profiles of the creators and everyone else involved in the series), an exclusive preview of ReVisioned: Tomb Raider by Peter Chung (an animated series), and free play of Tomb Raider: Anniversary. GameTap's partnership with Eidos Interactive also allowed for the company's subscribers to play the game when the clock struck midnight on release day (which is today). They also have an exclusive trailer of the game itself.

Tomb Raider: Anniversary is now available at GameTap for US$ 29.99.

Tomb Raider Anniversary Prpducer Lulu LaMer talks about game development - Image 1

Video game title Tomb Raider: Anniversary should arrive in North America in just a couple of days from now, or at least the versions for the PlayStation Portable, PS2, and Games for Windows platforms. Eidos Interactive did announce a Wii version of the remake but is still not quite ready to furnish any details.

Anyway, online site Gamasutra recently got hold of Crystal Dynamics Producer Lulu LaMer and discussed the game's development. The producer shared that one of the most daunting task in revisiting Lady Lara Croft's past was to create a game that triggered players' memories while maintaining a fresh and different feel to it. LaMer added that constraints in design somewhat helped them,

I'm in favor of constraints in design, they can really force creativity. We had a lot of creative freedom. We started with our hot list of important "nostalgia points" we needed to re-create, and we synched with Eidos early on to make sure all expectations were set appropriately.

Prior to this, Lulu LaMer was also the producer for PS2 title Tomb Raider: Legend and the experience she got there really helped in this project. The producer added that co-developer Buzz Monkey really knew what they were doing in terms of making the game for the PSP but that somehow was at odds with Crystal's plans of really pushing the PS2's capabilities. LaMer explained,

The problem was just that we were pushing the PS2 to its limits making massive, beautifully-detailed spaces with all the bells and whistles we could afford. Those goals were strictly at odds with what we knew would work for PSP, but we decided that the impact of an all-out PS2 version was worth the pain of PSP conversion.

After all is said and done, the collaborative effort between Eidos Interactive, Crystal Dynamics, and Buzz Monkey will be graded by the fans of the aging and resilient Tomb Raider franchise. But for what it's worth, Lulu Lamer shared that they had a blast making this game,

Our development approach (get things playable, iterate, collaborate) was entirely based around what we learned worked (or didn't work) on Legend. To be frank, the TR:A team is a bunch of opinionated, mouthy bastards, so it was a pleasure to get the opportunity to test our opinions. We had a good time doing it too!
