is going to be amazing
I've been looking forward to this game since 2005 or 2006. Looking forward to this!
Yeah. When Spore was first announced years ago, and subsequently demoed, it was amazing. I was seriously interested in what might have been one of the biggest things to happen to PC gaming in a long, long time. Then came the delays. Then more delays. Then the release date got "set" for the end of April, 2007. I think it was about the time we got to mid-June '07 and Spore was being delayed again, for who-knows-how-long, I didn't care anymore.
Sure, Spore would come out. It might be a decently fun game, even. But there wasn't any likelihood it was going to be a revolutionary event -- it wasn't going to be much of anything big at all.
I know there are people out there who would say, "Hey, if they found out it wasn't ready, and it really needed more work, let them get it right and release a perfect product! Don't rush it and release something broken, that's worse than waiting for it to be done right!"
But y'know what? sometimes, it isn't worth the wait. A quick bit of googling made it look like Spore was announced possibly as long ago as 2004 (don't quote me on that, I just did some cursory scans of a few different articles and readers' comments...) and while I'm sure that there have been games that have taken as long or longer to make it from concept to retail package, I suspect they didn't have nearly as huge an impact as they might have, had they been released sooner.
Another flaw with the method of "Let them take however long they need to get it right!" is that you simply cannot expect *any* piece of software written today -- or likely even in the past decade -- to ever be perfect. There will *always* be problems with the code, there will *always* be situations that the coders didn't consider or didn't think *needed* to be considered, and especially in a project like a video game, we're talking about millions of lines of code that teams of programmers have to go through. The best you can honestly expect to do is get it functioning reasonably well, and ship it.
And then there's the hype. Oh, we can't forget the hype machine! Take something good, spin it as the most amazing thing ever to grace our presence, the one thing that we'll never live without and never, ever forget... and, oops! Sorry, but we got your hopes up for nothing, you won't get to have it after all, at least not in the forseeable future. Oh, but did we mention that when it *does* arrive, it'll slice, dice, *and* make Julienne fries? It can even burn fat from your abs without you needing to do any exercise!
So again, I'm sorry, but I can't honestly say I care about Spore anymore. If a friend happens to have a copy (when it finally comes out, I'm still not buying this "confirmed release date" line) I'll check it out and see if it's worth picking up from the bargain bin a year later.
Hope somebody out there enjoys it, at least.
