Mars - Image 1The PS3 won't be the only console getting Spiders Games' action-RPG title, Mars. The game has just recently been announced to be in development for PS3, PC, and Xbox 360. Release has been set for the end of 2010, which is good because this game could definitely use some more polish. Check out the vid after the jump to see what I mean.

V for Vendetta, Moore, Lloyd - Image 1We posted an article one month ago that invited readers to do a little thought exercise. Here's what we said: "On the 5th of November we're going to post an article or two about video games, gadgets, technology, and general geekness ... the things about video gaming and technology that ought not be forgotten."

So here's our list of some video gaming and technology moments worth remembering. Hope this gets you thinking (and feeling nostalgic too!). And we look forward to your comments (and arguments). What do you remember and wish that the world will never forget?

Crytek's CryENGINE2 licensed for MMVW development - Image 1

Think Second Life, only it's going to be set in Mars. That's pretty much what Avatar Reality, Inc., a new development entity dedicated to the advancement of online community building, plans to make using Crytek's CryENGINE2 middleware. Avatar Reality has recently announced that they will be licensing the engine for use in the development of their upcoming massively multiplayer virtual world (MMVW).

Set in Terraformed Mars, Avatar Reality’s MMVW will allow players to "live their fantasy lives by creating personalized characters, or avatars, in a beautiful environment." See? Second Life in Mars. Now, if there's going to be a suffocating and bug-eyed Arnold Schwarzenegger with veins all popping out of his face somewhere outside that terraformed environment, we're certain this MMVW will be an instant hit.

"CryENGINE2 is able to render the most beautiful images, in real-time, that I've ever seen in my 20 years in the computer graphics industry," said Kazuyuki Hashimoto, president of Avatar Reality, Inc. "we are certain that the quality of these stunning, realistic images stemmed from the technology and not just talented artists. After viewing the images, there is no question that CryENGINE2 is the perfect engine for us to use to build our massively multiplayer virtual world."

Mars Sucks

An Intel team experimented with Google Earth to see how it can be used to make a PC game. Unlike other Google tools, Google Earth isn't web based; it's an application that you download and use on your PC, and that means you can play a game on Google Earth without having to open an Internet browser window.

The Intel team came up with Mars Sucks. It's a scavenger-hunt kind of game: you are given clues about the whereabouts of Martians and then you look for them and blast them to bits.

Even though the game is only a prototype, we have to say it's addictive (in a Where in the World Is Carmen Sandiego kind of way). That makes sense: Google Earth is an application that has wide appeal, and the game built on it is a pick-up-and-play kind of game that would appeal to casual gamers and different kinds of people.

The Gamasutra article (where we got this news from) covers the technical aspects, the problem-solving and troubleshooting steps in the game design process, and other nifty things that developers might want to look at. The source code is available for download, too. The Intel team suggests adding more levels and putting in sound.

In other news, Google and NASA are teaming up. Anybody else want visit the face on Mars?
