Among the good stuff at Game Developers Conference 2008, there was the bloody third-person shooter Postal 3 (Microsoft Xbox 360, PC) that is sure to showcase just how violent video games can be. New details pertaining to its development have surfaced, such as how it will be friendly to newbies and might see release next year. Hit that jump!

Here's something none of us saw coming - a Postal III (Xbox 360, PC, Mac) gameplay video in all its violent, uncensored glory. Yes, it seems that Running With Scissors is up to their old antics again, and we can't say we're not pleased with this fortunate turn of events. After all, the first two Postals, while uncompromisingly violent and brutal, were very solid and playable as first person shooters, as well as being a sort of a guilty pleasure.

Looking at the video, it seems that the jump's been made from first person to third, the camera tracking the currently-unknown trenchcoated character from behind. The visuals are looking very sharp, the environments (as well as the characters) chock-full of details. There's also more interactivity with the scenery as well, as we see the player shoot out some bottles from behind a bar, a car's front tire, and some of the slum's inhabitants. We also get to see a rather interesting weapon of what appears to be some sort of wild animal you can set on your victims. Not quite sure what animal it actually is, but it definitely does the job.

As soon as news flared up about a violent game banned, we knew this was bound to happen. For those uninformed, Running With Scissors' Postal (expanded by Special Delivery) was probably the granddaddy of extreme violent game controversies, and its equally violent successor, Postal II (expanded by Share the Pain and Apocalypse Weekend), was similarly banned in multiple regions despite a still growing fanbase on the PS2 and PC.

 

Postal was also one of the first titles to be blamed for tragedies in real life. But while Postal was created from the ground up to focus more on the hilarity of the idea of violence and not extreme violence, the series was the first to pick up the "Intense Violence" rating from the ESRB.

And now as the gaming community centers around the huge controversy concerning Manhunt 2 and calls for their freedom to choose what they can and cannot play, someone caught up with Vince Desi, CEO of Running With Scissors, for an interview regarding Take-Two Interactive's Manhunt 2.

Concerned for the direction the game industry is taking, Desi knows that the real issue behind the developments unfolding at present is actually the game industry allowing itself "to be set up." He believes that despite being a free society (pardon for his potshot at the UK), the game industry allows itself to be played like a puppet by the government, politicians and the media that want to play out the win-lose story and who should play what.

Video game development studio Running With Scissors (RWS) has a reputation for making bloody and gore-marred titles. One good testament to this is the Postal franchise with the first game being released ten years ago. Speaking of which, RWS just released three new screenshots for Postal 3.

Quite curiously, these images are nothing more but teasers. The blood and gore that we mentioned above cannot be seen in these screenshots. Instead, what we have here are snapshots of the new title's locations. To be quite honest, we were kind of expecting to see what Mr. The Postal Dude Jr. looks like today.

For those not familiar with this series, Postal follows the exploits of Postal Dude after he was evicted from his house. The game itself is a 2D shooter, mainly isometric, but with some top-down levels. Backgrounds are hand painted and the game also borrows some characteristics from the FPS genre.

But just the same, it's good to know that development for Postal 3 is moving along. RWS said that the game will be released some time in 2008 on platforms Xbox 360, Games for Windows (PC), and Mac OS.

December's just around the corner, and we all know that the holiday season always brings with it some awesome bargains and discounts. In fact, Running With Scissors has one such offering for all you Postal fans out there.

Fans and newcomers alike will surely love the newly released Postal Fudge Pack, a special edition of the series that brings gamers the entire Postal saga, from the original 1997 game to the multiplayer-optional Postal 2: Share The Pain and the climactic Postal 2: Apocalypse Weekend.
