It looks like Chris Taylor and his army at Gas Powered Games were keeping another secret, and if it weren't for a recently conducted interview, the mind behind THQ's Supreme Commander wouldn't have revealed the ultimate real-time strategy title as another surprise. Though it was revealed that Supreme Commander would probably arrive on Microsoft's Xbox 360 first, there is also hope that Gas Powered Games could deliver it to the Sony PlayStation 3. "You've almost made me confess that we're working on it... No, actually you have. That's good. I like that. This is a secret I want to share," said Taylor, after expounding on Gas Powered Games' efforts to create a friendly interface for console strategists. What's more is that the previously unveiled Space Siege, a sci-fi rehash of Dungeon Siege (think Rebelmind Games' Space Hack or Silverback Entertainment's Harbinger), will also come with console-friendly versions next year. Currently, Taylor views the Microsoft Xbox 360 as the current "platform of choice" for pushing PC games out to consoles, because of the least amount of finances involved in development. He still remains hopeful that Sony PlayStation 3 versions will soon follow, due to added developer feedback and a larger install base in the near future. News on whether the stand-alone expansion Supreme Commander: Forged Alliance will also hit consoles or not, or if a Space Siege Nintendo Wii version will be considered has yet to surface. There are speculations, however, that this move may be the result of THQ trying to cash in on its current published intellectual properties after witnessing a lackluster Q2 financial performance. |

THQ has just announced that Supreme Commander: Forged Alliance has gone gold, and it won't be long before Gas Powered Games' addition to the real-time strategy front will take to PCs around the globe. Tactical and strategic commanders alike will now have to face the incoming Seraphim onslaught and divert human kind's fate from extinction in Supreme Commander: Forged Alliance. Forming a shaky alliance among the three human factions, the Cybran Nation, Aeon Illuminate, and United Earth Federation will gain new units including state-of-the-art Tier 4 experimental units to toy with. The Seraphim are masters of powerful and highly-advanced quantum technology, and even the most "Napoleonic" of commanders will have to master all the new additions to thwart the alien invasion. THQ's Supreme Commander: Forged Alliance will invade North American retail stores on November 6. Supreme Commander: Forged Alliance is a stand-alone expansion to Chris Taylor's Supreme Commander for Windows PCs over DVD and CD-ROM. |

Sega recently announced the development of Space Siege, an action RPG that happens to be a "spiritual successor" to the Dungeon Siege series. This time, however, the story is set in the far flung reaches of space. In Space Siege, Earth is lost to an alien attack, and the last few survivors cast themselves out among the stars in colony ships. Players are put in the shoes of Seth Walker, a cybernetics engineer thrust into the position to become humanity's savior. As the story unfolds, Seth is given the choice to sacrifice bits of his humanity to receive cybernetic upgrades which would help him achieve his goals. Would he be willing to trade away his humanity to help save the human race? Or would he keep his flesh and blood intact and survive on pure ingenuity? Each choice goes beyond the cosmetic and actually affects the world around it. Aside from an intense single player mode, Space Siege would also offer a co-op multiplayer which allows up to four players to experience a totally unique game. This speaks volumes as to the replayability of the game as each session allows the players to create and fashion their own unique mission structures. Developing the game is Chris Taylor and his team from Gas Powered Games, the same folks who worked on the Total Annihilation, Dungeon Siege, and Supreme Commander titles. Sega officials promise that Space Siege would be a "compelling and innovative successor to the very popular Dungeon Siege franchise.” Space Siege will be featured on the cover of PC Gamer Magazine's September 2007 issue. Check out your local newsstands and subscription lists to get the low-down on this potentially great game. |

In an email conversation between 1Up's Patrick Kepleck and Gas Powered Games' Chris Taylor, the industry rock star defended his stance on his opinion editorial published on GameDaily. Entitled "Reward Players, Don't Punish Them!" the piece talked about breaking away from the mindset of complex gameplay and return to the roots of gaming.Fun, according to Taylor, is the reason why people actually engage in gaming. Punishing players may be a tad frustrating, especially if a game balks at the less-skilled players. "I'm impressed that the industry made it this far with our carnival-style punishment system," said Taylor at one point of his editorial. Although his ideas have already been proven with the likes of Electronic Arts' The Sims and arcade-ish titles like RailRoad Tycoon, the impression he left was a confusing one. It's no secret that THQ's Supreme Commander was a title created for the "core" of the gaming market - albeit more likely the fans of Total Annihilation. And when 1Up asked the game's executive producer about this, he replied: You are correct in that Supreme Commander is a "hardcore" game, but for the most part, it doesn't quite lineup with the kinds of games that I was referring to. The theme and style of play is what makes it inaccessible in my mind, at least more so than the complexity of the rules and learning curve. Having said that, I don't disagree, and personally will be working on a lot more titles that do precisely what my op-ed piece describes... rewards players and provide a highly entertaining experience, with little or no punishment. I just want you to know that in no way am I contradicting myself... Supreme Commander was designed almost 4 years ago, and it's just hit the market now. We have new titles in development that we haven't announced that reflect this new philosophy that I can't quite talk about yet... which I know you probably have figured out. Does this mean Gas Powered Games might go casual soon? While likely, there's no indication that they are going to drop the whole hardcore following just yet. According to some reports, there won't just be another follow up to Supreme Commander, but a CGI motion picture (egads!) based on the franchise, too! |

Just last February, Supreme Commander was released for gamers who had been eagerly waiting for the game. Well, Chris Taylor and his merry crew at Gas Powered Games sure work fast as THQ has just announced Supreme Commander: Forged Alliance. Those who loved the first one will surely love this new incarnation. Supreme Commander: Forged Alliance boasts of a entirely new single player campaign, a new faction, and new multiplayer modes. This upcoming sequel is set after the events of the Infinite War, where three factions (Aeon Illuminate, Cybran Nation, and United Earth Federation) slugged it out for domination. In the new title, there will be a whole lot of improvements with the nations' navies, orbital weaponry, and counter intelligence technologies. Imagine what you can do with the 100 new units that will debut in Forged Alliance. Chris Taylor, CEO of Gas Powered Games had this to say: Supreme Commander: Forged Alliance is not only the continuation of the epic story that is unfolding inside the game's universe, it is the continuation of our goal to move the bar for RTS gaming even higher than ever. Forged Alliance offers over 100 new units, more maps and an entirely new faction... we are stuffing this game with all kinds of new features! Well, Gas Powered Games did say that it will be continuing Supreme Commander, we just didn't know it was going to be this soon. Reportedly, the sequel is scheduled for release in November this year. Anyway, more news on this when they become available. |
