There was a time when Sega had 65% of the gaming industry's market share in North America - the time when Sonic the Hedgehog was a lot cooler than an Italian plumber, the time when Yu Suzuki was comparable to Nintendo's Shigeru Miyamoto. Arcade fans spent countless hours getting the fastest time in Hang-On, perfecting the act of not killing civilians in Virtua Cop, and trying to beat in Virtua Fighter.

It's sad to see one of the most influential companies in video game history struggle in today's tough competition, but we have to admit that Sega's presence is not as strong as it was before - not as strong as it should be. Some credit this to the losses that came with Dreamcast's fall, while some point fingers at lackluster games in recent years. What we can be certain about is that fans want to see Sega in its former glory.

A quick look at Sega's upcoming and recent games line-up reveal familiar titles for young and old, most on multiple platforms. Where's the problem, then? Pretty much every gamer is part of their target market, especially since most of Sega's established franchises are aimed at the biggest audience possible, so why is the company not doing as well as other publishers?

Without having to nitpick on quality of particular titles that didn't experience warm reception, let's just put up a battle plan that would rile up Sega fans while giving the former champ a good chance of propelling to the top. In other words, a Sega fan's wish list.

Shenmue - Image 1Sega fans in the know are shaking their legs in anticipation for this year's Tokyo Game Show, and they have a pretty good reason why. Korean website Ruliweb dished out what is supposedly Sega's TGS 2007 lineup which seems to be more of a Sega fan wishlist.

Said to have cost US$ 70 million, Shenmue and its sequel easily became the biggest and most expensive series at the time. No thanks to the Dreamcast's early demise, many have missed the epic tale of Ryo in his quest to avenge his father. Still, Yu Suzuki's masterpiece created a following of zealous fans. Rumors have come and gone, and all hope is almost lost, but the list posted Shenmue 3 for the Xbox 360.

Other noteworthy titles coming from the classic archives include Fighters Megamix 2 and Virtua Fighter Kids 2. Some Dreamcast hits are also said to make a return, like ChuChu Rocket!, Skies of Arcadia 2, and Jet Set Radio Next.

Before this blogger throws fits, we'll have to say that the list is yet to be confirmed. Down to the rumor mill we go, but our ears are open for any official word.

QJ's Top Ten Mecha Villains - Image 1

The world video gaming is chock-full of memorables, from myths to personalities. Now, for this segment of our Top ten, we'll be looking at some of the more memorable mecha villains we've encountered from past gaming experience. Needless to say, this is more an opinion list than an official review (bias alert!), so readers who beg to differ are most welcome to post their two cents. With that said, we move on to the list:

Metal Gear Rex - Image 1

Metal Gear Rex (Metal Gear Solid)
Shame on you if you haven't figured out who this is. Rex is the final boss of Metal Gear Solid, the first of Kojima's Metal Gear franchise entering into the PlayStation scene. Much of MGS' story revolved around you (Snake) trying to disable this (walking) nuclear artillery platform, alongside unveiling the complex personalities that consisted of the game's mix of allies and enemies - Psycho Mantis, anyone?

Rex will also go down in gaming notoriety for two other things: As being one of the most memorable boss battles in the franchise (Ray from MGS2 was too easy!), and for grinding Grey Fox into the ground during a famed cutscene, like so much spaghetti sauce.

Anubis - Image 1

Anubis(Zone of the Enders)
For the guys not too well-versed in mythology, Anubis is the name of Egyptian god of the underworld...and the name of the central villain in Hideo Kojima's Zone of the Enders: The 2nd Runner game for the PS2. Designed alongside Jehuty as a proverbial nemesis, we'll remember Anubis for (among other things) introducing the player to the Zero-Shift ability...and for skewering the said player with a steel girder. First impressions aside, Nohman's megalomaniacal outlook only made Anubis look or the more sinister.

Get PlaydWhat is it with television shows and publications removing the E's from their words to make themselves hip? There's Punk'd, and... and... actually, that's pretty much it.

Playd Magazine is another piece of media out there with a missing vowel, but unlike Punk'd, it's got the power to make you think. It's a e-zine that covers the many different branches of gaming, with news, interviews and articles to get you in the mood to play. With their fourth issue, they want you to remember the now-defunct (but not necessarily dead) console: the Sega Dreamcast.

In addition to their Sega Dreamcast retrospective, they've also come up with previews for some upcoming multiplatform games such as Sonic the Hedgehog and Army of Two and the Wii Sports which is headed for Nintendo's next-gen console. There's even a special on Akihabara, which is Japan's well-known tech district and haven for all otaku refugees.

Their mag is in PDF format, so you can view it on any computer that reads Adobe's format. Of course, if you've got yourself a tweak of some sort for your PSP, then you could also try seeing it there. They come out with a new issue every two months, so you've got time before the next one comes out. Just head on over to their site and enjoy!
