The vice president of Electronic Arts' Jeff Brown said some pretty strong words regarding Activision and Vivendi's decision to leave the Entertainment Software Association (ESA). The recent Byron report released in Europe gave the different classification groups in the region something to think about. Despite advocating a medium between both the BBFC and PEGI rating systems, ELSPA had its own opinion regarding the matter by favoring the PEGI Age Rating System as the sole classification system for video games in Europe. The Entertainment and Leisure Software Publishers Association (ELSPA) and some of its partners recently conducted a raid which yielded illegally copied Nintendo DS games stored on discs. Meanwhile, ELSPA's crime unit head, John Hillier, wants to remind gamers (whatever console you may own) the detestable effects of piracy on the whole industry. Sony Computer Entertainment UK managing Director Ray Maguire was at the recently-held ELSPA press conference and he had a few things to say about the now popular Byron Report. The boss commented that the report's recommendations are valid today, but when the time comes that brick-and-mortar retailers take a back seat to online stores, things will be done differently to enforce the rating system. The recent review released by Dr. Tanya Byron regarding the rating standards of violent video games in Europe was met with a most positive response from the different media classification groups in the region. The BBFC, ELSPA, ISFE, and Tiga each gave their own statements, generally agreeing with the suggestions given in the comprehensive document released by the British psychologist. The UK's Chart Track has just announced last year's sales figures for consoles and games. And while 2007 celebrates a sharp rise on figures for all the consoles, a considerable chunk of the profit pie goes to handheld systems. More details in the full article.

Possibly driven by media's focus on violence in video games, the UK government has launched a six months-long review on the gaming industry. Psychologist Tanya Byron will be heading the project, with the cooperation of UK's Entertainment and Leisure Software Publisher's Association (Elspa).

Although Elspa will lend a hand to the reviewing effort, its chairman Paul Jackson still has some misgivings about the project, saying:

I think the video games industry is this year's whipping boy. Too often we are blamed for everything from obesity to youth violence it is just not true and it's not appropriate. We are a very important British industry and we are very responsible keen to ensure that our products are only played by those who they are designed for.

Margaret Robinson, former editor of Edge Magazine believes that there's no more need for legislation against the gaming industry, saying that it holds higher standards that the film industry. "This is a solved problem," she said.

Nevertheless, the leading figures of gaming have positive outlook on what the review will yield. Said Jackson:

We feel quite positively about this review. It's clear the review is about making sure parents are properly informed about what their youngsters are playing and what they are accessing on the internet.

 

The London Games Festival, a significant success last year, will be returning for a repeat performance with the British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTA) as its primary focus this year. The event will begin October 22, 2007, reports Games Industry, and will continue for four more days to October 26, with an invite to all gamers from MMOs and PCs to consoles and handhelds.

Aside from several game-related forums which tackle legal issues and corporate opportunities, a Video Games Live concert will also be held at the Royal Albert Hall, while the Entertainment & Leisure Software Publishers Association (ELSPA) plans to discuss the perception of gaming. The Science Museum will also host a study of immersion in video games, and the London Game Career Fair will be offering aspiring game developers a chance to enter the UK game development scene.

It appears that the Europe will be celebrating more than just an Oktoberfest come late fall (or early winter) as the GameCity Interactive Entertainment Festival, or simply the GameCity Festival, will also be partially coinciding with the London Games Festival, on October 24-28, 2007, in Nottingham, England. Fresh off the news that Manhunt 2 was essentially banned in the UK, the director general of the Entertainment and Leisure Software Publisher's Association (ELSPA) also made known their thoughts on the British Board of Film Classification (BBFC) ruling, saying that the recent banning proves that UK's game ratings system works.

According to Paul Jackson, ELSPA's director general, "A decision from the BBFC such as this demonstrates that we have a games ratings system in the UK that is effective. It shows it works and works well." He continues, "Any decision the BBFC takes, it takes on the basis of its remit to rate on screen entertainment."

Jackson also noted that the games industry is despite this one ruling, the games industry is still one that makes games for everyone. "The important thing to know," he says, "is that all games are rated according to age suitability, with over 70 per cent of games being available to all ages over three years."
