CoD4 packaged with Punkbuster Anti-Cheat software - Image 1Activision has enlisted Even Balance Inc. for their proprietary software PunkBuster Anti Cheat to police Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare multiplayer games on the PC. This software will be incorporated into the game itself making it harder for hackers to crack.

The application itself is pretty solid with reliable features such as real time memory scans by PB Client on players' computers searching for hacks/cheats and even a two-tiered background auto-update system using multiple Internet Master Servers to prevent spoofing. It is perhaps due to these safeguards that the company has been tapped for popular games such as Quake III, Rainbow Six: Vegas, Enemy Territory: Quake Wars, and the first two Call of Duty games.

Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare (also available for the Xbox 360 and PS3) is slated to be out by November 5 this year. Hopefully, with PunkBuster installed, we'll be able to play more without worrying about cheaters ruining everyone's fun.

Battlefield 2142

Both EA and Digital Illusions (DICE) have taken steps to calm concerns regarding the issues that Battlefield 2142 players experienced during the game's first few days on sale.

DICE recently informed Battlefield 2142 players through the game's official forums that they are aware of the problems and are currently taking steps to address them. The issues revolved around improperly registered stats and awards, PunkBuster problems, and disconnections from the EA Master Service.

"Last weekend we made updates that resolved the issues causing some awards or stats to not be properly awarded to players," said the DICE forum update's first point. "Unfortunately any stats or awards not received before this update can not be replaced."

For help regarding problems with the PunkBuster anti-cheat technology, DICE advised players to visit the PunkBuster website and go through the manual update procedure to fix any lingering game issues with PunkBuster. According to their forum update, DICE is "currently working with PunkBuster to resolve player issues and allow for a smoother experience and to eliminate server kick issues that are still affecting some players."

As a final point, DICE assured players that they will be monitoring the issues closely and will be taking the necessary steps to resolve them. "We have added additional enhancements to our server infrastructure to eliminate the majority of the disconnection problems. We will be putting forth every effort through the weekend to completely eliminate this issue for all our players."

DICE also assured players that they "will continue to update everyone on our status until these issues are resolved."
